Small towns may only have one or two local taxi operators, but in most cities you will find that many taxis belong to large companies. All taxis in Denmark are licensed by the authorities. They are equipped with meters and fares are regulated. Danish taxis are easily recognised by the green and yellow illuminated on their roof or in the windshield. The light indicates whether or not the taxi is free. If it is on it is available for service the light will be on. If the light is off, the taxi is occupied.

You can get a taxi by hailing one on the street or by requesting one by phone. There are taxi stands at all major transport nodes in Denmark, and you can always ask hotels and restaurants to call a taxi for you.

Many taxi companies operate different types of vehicles to accommodate customers' specific needs. "Ordinary" 4-seater sedans can accommodate four people and four medium-size suitcases. Station-car taxis can accommodate rather more luggage than a sedan. Many companies have larger cars or minibuses, which can carry more than four people, as well as taxis with wheelchair accessibility.

When you call for a taxi remember to inform the service assistant of the number of people travelling, where you want to be picked up, where you are going to, and whether you have a lot of luggage. Remember also to inform the taxi operator if you are travelling with children which require a special child seat. Some taxi operators will allow you travel with your dog in certain taxis, so remember to inform the taxi company if you have a dog with you. You should also inform the company if you need a taxi that you can access with wheelchair, or you are bringing a stroller. 

Many taxi service companies have an MSN service which lets you know when the taxi has arrived.

Some taxi companies enable frequent users to have a taxi turn out at a specific location on demand. If you are frequent user of taxis you should ask the taxi company if it offers such services.

All Danish taxis use meters and charge more or less the same basic fare per kilometre travelled. However, fares are higher in the afternoon, during the evenings and at night, as well as at weekends. Furthermore, if you order a taxi with more seats than an “ordinary” four-seat taxi the fare is likely to be higher. Also, some taxi companies will start on a higher fare if you call after a taxi by phone, instead of hailing one on the street. The taxi fares are non-negotiable.

Note that many companies charge extra for bicycles and prams/large strollers. Many companies also charge extra if the driver carries your luggage to the door.

In addition to cash, most taxis accept credit cards, but check with the driver as you enter the taxi. If you want to pay by credit card, many taxi companies request that you give your credit card to the driver when you enter the taxi. Your card will most likely be swiped two times; the first time to verify the card’s validity, the second time to make a withdrawal from your account.

Note that the taxi driver has the right to ensure that you as a passenger are able to pay the fare. If you request a receipt for the fare, the taxi driver will provide you one.

The local Citizens’ Services will provide you with contact information for the local provider of free Danish language courses. After sign-up, the language school will want to see you and give an assessment of which class will give you best value and most effective learning possibilities.

You may come across so called black-market taxis in Denmark. A black-market taxi is basically a person driving a private car who offers to drive you to your destination for a certain sum of money. The car will not have a taxi light and the person driving the car will not have a licence to offer taxi services. Do not take a black-market taxi. Black-market taxis are illegal, and as a passenger you have no way of knowing who the driver is, or if he or she will drive you to your destination for the price you have agreed.

Surveys have shown that learning Danish benefits you both professionally and socially in Denmark. Learning Danish will give you an insight into Danish cultural and social norms. This is important for successful communication and networking, whether on a personal or a business level. Speaking Danish is thus a key competence valued by many Danish companies.

Adequate Danish language skills - including a certified exam - are also essential if you wish to get a permanent residence permit or eventually Danish citizenship. As a foreigner the Danish Education Act gives you the right to a high standard Danish language teaching for up to 3 years after the first enrolment in a course. Apart from a nominal fee, the official Danish language programme is free of charge.

The free Danish language courses are structured in modules. Each module is concluded with a state-approved test in compliance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Every municipality is required to offer free language courses to foreigners, although it is up to the individual Municipalities to decide how they wish to organise this. Some municipalities provide courses themselves, some work together with other municipalities, and some municipalities have signed an agreement with a private language course provider in the area. However, in all major cities in Denmark, you can find a provider who can offer you Danish courses based on your learning preferences, your schedule, and your Danish level.

According to the Danish Educational Act, foreigners are entitled to free Danish language courses during the first three years of their stay in Denmark.

You must also:

• Be over 18.
• Have a valid residence permit or certificate of registration in Denmark.
• Have a Danish CPR number.

If you live in another EU country but work in Denmark you also have the right to free Danish tuition.

If you do not meet these requirements, you may still enrol by paying a fee of approximately DKK 70 per lesson.

According to the Danish Educational act, all municipalities are required to offer free Danish courses to foreigners, for up to three years after the first enrolment in a course. For contact information to the free Danish language provider close to where you live, contact your local Citizens’ Services office.

You can attend language courses in your home municipality or in the municipality where you are employed. If you wish to attend free language course in another municipality than the one you work or live in, you have to apply for permission from the municipality in which you have your registered address.

In order to register and be issued with a CPR number you need to show up in person at Citizens’ Services in the Municipality in which you live. This also applies to accompanying spouses and/or children.

To obtain a CPR number you must have an address in Denmark. You must also present a variety of documents depending on your current civil status (see below). Please note that if your documents are not in Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, English or German, you should bring along a certified translation of them.

At Citizens’ Services you will be asked for:

• Your Danish residence and work permit (non-EU/EEA citizens), or certificate of registration (for EU/EEA and Swiss citizens). Nordic citizens must bring proof of their Nordic personal identification number, e.g. your passport. 
• Some form of photo id, e.g. your passport 
• If you are married, your marriage certificate or a certified copy of it.
• If you have children, your child/children’s birth certificate(s).
• If you are divorced, your divorce certificate.
• If you are a widow/widower, the death certificate of your husband/wife.

You get a health insurance card from your Municipal Citizens’ Services when you have been issued with a CPR number.

The number of language class offers and the variety of schedules, vary from provider to provider, and is often related to the number of foreigners that are living and studying Danish in the different Municipalities. If you move to a new address you are required to register your new address at Citizens’ Services in the Municipality you move to. You must do so no later than five days after you have moved. When you have registered your new address you will receive a new health insurance card. If you move to a new municipality or more than 15 kilometres away from where your general practitioner is located you will need to choose a new general practitioner. It pays to give Danish language acquisition a high priority during your first few months in Denmark. All experience shows that the sooner you start attending Danish lessons – the faster and the better you will learn the language.

Most trains have areas that are designated for prams. Note that on IC and ICL trains you are required to reserve space for your pram in advance and that such reservation cannot be made online.

You can take your bike on most of trains. The area that is designated for bikes are usually marked, showing an illustration of a bike on or beside the door. If you take a bike, you must buy a supplementary ticket for it. Note that there is only space for a limited number of bikes on any one train and that it is up to the conductor to decide whether or not there is room for your bike. During the summer the railways companies often require you to reserve a space for your bike. You can neither reserve nor buy bike tickets online.

In Denmark you must buy a ticket before you travel. Tickets are checked by a conductor on the train and if you cannot produce a valid ticket you will be fined.

When you buy tickets, you can buy either one-way tickets or return. On IC or ICL trains, you can choose between second or first class tickets.

You are not required to reserve a seat for your train journey but it is the only way you are guaranteed not to be left standing. If you wish to reserve a seat you must specify this when you buy your ticket. Seat reservations coast approximately DKK 25. Note that even though you are not required to reserve a seat for your journey, it is recommended that you do so for journeys during peak periods.

Unless you ask for a ticket for a specific departure, the ticket you buy is likely to be valid for two hours. This means that you can use the ticket on any train that leaves for your destination within two hours of buying your ticket. Remember that if you make a seat reservation, it is only valid for the specified departure. The time validity of your ticket is stated on your ticket.

Denmark's main airport, and the largest in Scandinavia, is Copenhagen International Airport, Kastrup. The majority of international flights fly in and out of Kastrup. The rules that govern travel time guarantees differ from one service operator to another. You must contact the service operator concerned to find out which rules apply in the event of a delay.

Acquaint yourself with the rules that apply before choosing another means of transport to reach your destination. A refund of your extra travel expenses often requires that certain conditions are fulfilled, and sometimes you will only get a partial refund of your expenses. A maximum expense refund amount also applies.

If you have been delayed and you wish to contact the service operator to check whether you are eligible for a refund, make sure that you have detailed information about your planned journey and the actual delay involved.

Many train and bus services correspond, and the internet journey planner, www.rejseplanen.dk, simplifies finding out which services that do so. Rejseplanen.dk (the Journey Planner) is based on data provided by all the bus and rail operators and most of the ferry services in Denmark – local as well as national.
 

Many of Denmark’s small islands can only be reached  by boat or ferry. In addition to the Great Belt Bridge, there ferry services also operate between and connect Jutland and Zealand.

As tips as to what you should make a note of if you intend to request a refund:
The scheduled date, place and time of departure.

• The planned transport route number.
• Your scheduled destination and time of arrival.
• Your actual time of arrival.
• What went wrong - why were you delayed?
• What extra expenses did you incur and how did you reach your final destination, e.g. if you took a taxi, where did your take the taxi from and to, and what did you pay?

On most bus services, you can buy tickets on the bus from a ticket machine or the driver. Where and how you buy tickets varies, depending on the operating company and the type of bus you are traveling in, e.g. whether it is a city bus or a regional bus. 

Some bus companies accept credit cards on the bus. However, it is always a good idea to bring cash if you intent to buy tickets on the bus. On some of the long distance connections you can reserve seats and buy tickets in advance.

The Danish health insurance covers the cost of acute medical treatment during the first month of a vacation in Europe. You must therefore also take your Danish health insurance card with you when you travel outside Denmark. However, please note that the health insurance does not cover the cost of repatriation for medical reasons to your home country or Denmark, emergency repatriation or personal liability. For this reason, we encourage you to take out travel insurance/ additional insurance prior to your departure.

Many cities and regions in Denmark are divided into travel zones and the fare you pay depends on how many zones you travel through. You will, however, generally be charged for a minimum of two zones. You will find zone maps at the bus stations.

In the cities, you can often use your ticket to travel for as long as it is valid on public transport, both train and bus services, within the number of zones you have paid for. When you travel on long distance bus services you will often pay a set fare between destinations along the route and not according to a zone system.

The public health insurance doses not cover the cost of e.g. medicine, dental care, physiotherapy and podiatry. However, you may be eligible for a subsidy. The health insurance does not cover the cost of repatriation for medical reasons when you are abroad, either.

If you frequently travel to one destination or within the same number of zones, it may be a good idea to buy a travel card (månedskort/periodekort) or a discount card (klippekort). The smartest buy depends on how frequently you travel.

A travel card allows you to travel as many times you like within the number of zones for which you have bought your travel card, for as long as the card is valid. Many companies offer travel cards valid from 30 to 365 days. Some offer a reduced-rate period card which is not valid during the rush hour. Note that many of the night bus services have different fares than daytime services, which means that your travel card may not be valid on these buses.

If you want a period travel card you will usually have to go the company’s ticket office. Have with you some form of photo-ID, your health insurance card as proof of your CPR number and a passport-sized photo for your travel pass. Weekend and weekly travel cards are often available at kiosks and at tourist information offices and do not require a photo or proof of identity.

A discount card is valid for 10 journeys within the number travel zones you have bought the card for. You pay less per journey if you travel with a discount card than you do with a single ticket.  When you travel with a discount card you must punch the card at the start of your journey. When you have punched your discount card or bought a ticket, the card or the ticket is valid for a certain time period. When you punch your discount card, the start time of your journey is stamped onto the card. The time of purchase is also stamped on the ticket you buy from the ticket machine or the bus driver. The time validity of a ticket and discount card varies in accordance to the number of zones for which the discount card/ticket is valid. The exact validity period of a discount card and/or a ticket is specified on the card/ticket.

For directions to drive from one point to another, the Danish Yellow Pages’ website, degulesider.dk, has a map search application. Enter your point of departure and destination in the boxes at the top of the screen and a route suggestion will appear on the map.

The internet journey planer, rejseplanen.dk, has a service which allows you to compare a car journey with a journey by bus and/or train. Most bus companies post bus routes and timetable on their website. Often, you can also find bus timetables at the bus station and on the bus. Furthermore, the Internet journey planer, www.rejseplanen.dk is very useful if you are looking for travel routes, departure and arrival times. The journey planner is based on data provided by all the bus and railway operators and most of the ferry services in Denmark – local as well as national. For an English version of www.rejseplanen.dk, click on the UK flag at the bottom of the page.

On many city bus services, one adult is entitled to travel with two children under the age of twelve for free. However, children under 12 travelling alone pay a children’s fare. Children under 16 can buy children’s tickets and children’s discount cards. Ask the driver or at the ticket office about the rules that apply when travelling with a specific company.

Local bus services in the Aarhus area are coordinated by the bus company Midttrafik. Read more about Midttrafik and their services on Midttrafik’s website: www.midttrafik.dk.
In Aarhus, you will find two types of buses – a yellow buss and a blue bus.

City buses are yellow. 

In 2012 Aarhus Sporveje (Aarhus traffic company) introduces new rules for entering buses. For those of you, who use public transportation, it will mean that you will be able to enter a bus using both front and back doors.

You cannot buy tickets from the driver on the yellow buses. You buy your tickets in the ticket machine located either at the back or in the centre section of the bus. Please note that that not all ticket machines accept credit cards and only newer machines have English services. The bus fare depends on the number of zones you are travelling. An increasing number of Danes are abandoning their landline phones in favour of their mobile. Internet access is also widespread. Numbers published by Statistics Denmark show that in 2009 86% of all Danes had internet access at home, that 96% of Danish enterprises in Denmark have internet access, and 88 % have their own website. Several companies in Denmark offer telephone, TV and Internet services at fairly reasonable prices by European standards. Most of the telecom companies offer high-speed internet connections and many of the companies offer package deals including a telephone line, internet connection and possibly cable TV in the same subscription.

In Denmark everyone over the age of 18 who has a TV,  computer or mobile phone with internet access are legally obliged to pay for a media licence. If you only have a radio, you will have to pay for a radio licence. You are required to register for a licence no later than 14 days after you have acquired an appliance.

One media licence includes all appliances in the households of married couples, couples living together, and children living at home with their parents.

If you want a Danish mobile number you can either sign up for a subscription or buy a prepaid package with a SIM card. A subscription includes a contract you have to sign, and often requires payment of a monthly fee. Depending on the deal, some subscription contracts require you to subscribe for a minimum period - usually six months. Note that in order to subscribe you will have to have a Danish CPR number. Most mobile operators offer a variety of deals, e.g. deals which work out cheapest if you make a lot of international calls, primarily communicate via SMS, make a lot of short calls, or have long conversations, etc. To find the best and cheapest deal, you must know how you will be using your phone. Make sure to compare different companies’ deals and rates before you sign up as a customer. With a prepaid package you pay up front for connection time and can replenish your calling credit whenever you want to. A prepaid calling service does not require you to sign a long-term contract or pay a monthly subscription fee; although an establishment fee may apply.

Many mobile telephony providers have an online service, where you may replenish your calling credit, using e.g. a Visa or a Dankort. Some companies also sell calling time in stores, kiosks and at newsagents, as well as in their own company stores. Note that you can only buy calling credit from the company, where you are registered as a customer.

The local Citizens’ Services will provide you with contact information for the local provider of free Danish language courses. After sign-up, the language school will want to see you and give an assessment of which class will give you best value and most effective learning possibilities.

Many companies will offer you a cheaper cash price for a mobile phone if you sign up as a customer and for certain subscriptions. These subscription deals usually bind you for at least six months and require you to pay a monthly subscription. It can be a good idea to ask the company to specify how much you will end up paying for the phone, including the binding subscription fees. They are legally obliged to provide this information in adverts. You should also remember to make sure that the subscription deal´s calling rates and service harmonise with your mobile usage.

In order to use your foreign mobile phone in Denmark with a Danish SIM card, the telephone must not be SIM-locked. The phone must also be compatible with the GSM standard.

All municipal authorities have a registry of residents. If you move to a new address you are required to notify the municipal authorities within five days of moving. You should also notify Post Danmark to ensure that you will continue receiving mail. Post Denmark can also forward all the mail sent to your old address to your new address for up to six months.  You can obtain a “moving folder” at post offices containing all the forms you need to notify the authorities and Post Denmark about your move.

In Denmark you will find that many children and adults engage in organised sports activities. In fact, almost two thirds of all children and young people engaged in sports club-activities in their spare time. Joining a sports club is not only about getting exercise, it is also a great place to meet people and to build a social network.

Many sports clubs have a website, where you can find information about the club and their activities. Unfortunately most of this information is only available in Danish, but if you find a sports club you are interested in joining contact the club via email or give them a call and ask how you can become a member. Most clubs are interested in having new members and will be happy to answer your questions.

A membership often entails paying a monthly, quarterly or annual membership fee. The size of the fee depends on the club and what activities it offers.

ICS is a joint initiative by International Community, Aarhus Municipality Citizens’ Services, the Danish tax agency, SKAT, the State Administration for Central Jutland, Workindenmark and Immigration Service. At ICS, representatives of the various authorities will assist you with legal documents that you are required to deal with upon arrival when moving to Denmark.

The service is based on International Community's One Stop Shop, which was initiatated in collaboration with Aarhus Municipality Citizens’ Services, the Danish tax agency, SKAT, the State Administration for Central Jutland in December 2009.

When non-Danish citizens move to Denmark they are required to have a number of legal documents, such as application for EU registration certificate (For EU/EEA and Swiss citizens), getting a CPR number and health insurance card, and acquiring a Danish tax card. These are documents that are handled by different authorities, who are all located at different addresses.

The ICS is based on International Community's One Stop Shop service since 2009. The service was initiated to make the process of acquiring different legal documents easier for international workers and their families, when they arrive in the Aarhus area. At International Citizen Service internationals can meet with The State Administration of Central Jutland, Aarhus Municipality’s Citizens’ Services, and SKAT, at the same time, in the same office.

At ICS you can get assistance with:

• residence permit for non-EU citizens
• registration certificate for EU citizens (for EU/EEA and Swiss citizens)
• tax card
• social security number - CPR (residents of Aarhus Municipality only)
• health insurance card
• Danish driver’s licence
•  

At ICS you will also meet representatives of International Community who will help you deal with any other enquiries you may have.

• ICS cannot help you to obtain a CPR number and health insurance card if you do not live in Aarhus Municipality.
• To obtain a CPR number you must contact your own Municipality’s Citizens’ Services.
•  
• You will not get a CPR number or a health insurance card on the day of your visit to ICS. The service assistants from Aarhus Citizens’ Services will assist you with your application for a CPR number and a health insurance card. Your CPR number and your health insurance card will be sent to your Danish address within 1-2 weeks of submission of your application.

To make your visit at ICS as efficient as possible, there are different documents you can fill out before you arrive. There are also a range of items you must remember to bring with you to ICS, depending on what you need assistance with. 

You may also find it helpful to read up on what legal documents you are required to have in order upon arrival in Denmark, before you go to ICS. By doing so, you are better prepared for the meeting, and you get to know what questions are relevant for you to ask, when you meet with the different authorities.

If you are an EU citizen and need to apply for a Certificate of Registration we suggest that you print out The Application of EU Residence Document and fill in what you can before you visit ICS. This will save time at ICS, as well as giving you the opportunity to familiarise yourself with the process before your meeting with a representative of the State Administration for Central Jutland.

You must submit your application in person. This also applies to accompanying family members. When you go to ICS, take:

• Your passport
• A passport photo
• Documentation for the reason of your stay – you can find examples of which documentation this may be at the State Administration’s website.

Furthermore:

• If your child/children is/are moving with you to Denmark, the child/children must also appear in person when you submit your application. And you must present your child’s/children’s birth certificate(s) (the original or a certified copy) and a passport photo of each child.
• If you are bringing a child/children from a previous relationship with you to Denmark, you must present to the Regional State Administration a document which verifies that the other legal parent has given his/her permission for you to relocate the child/children to Denmark. You must also take with you a verified copy of a photo ID of the other legal parent.

To qualify for a CPR number you must have an address in Denmark. Furthermore, you must take with you a variety of certificates depending on your current civil status (see below). Please note that if your certificates are not in Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, English or German, you should take with you a certified translation of them. 

• Your Danish residence and work permit (Non-EU citizens), or Certificate of Registration (for EU/EEA citizens) if you have already been issued with one. Nordic citizens must take their passport. 
• Some form of photo ID e.g. your passport.
• If you have children, your child’s/ren’s birth certificate(s).
• If you are married, your marriage certificate or a certified copy of it.
• If you are divorced, your divorce certificate.
• If you are a widow/er, the death certificate of your husband/wife.

• You to fill out form number 04.063 EN. It may be a good idea to print out the form, fill in what you can and take it with you to ICS.
• For a declaration or contract of employment from your employer stating your salary and terms of employment.
• For your CPR number. If you have not yet been issued with a CPR number, bring some form of a valid photo-ID, such as your passport.

Your tax card states your CPR number or your tax ID number, your address, the percentage of tax that your employer is required to deduct from your salary, your tax allowances and deductions, and the date from which the tax card is valid. The tax card in Denmark is an e-card. This means that once you have registered with SKAT your employer can access information about your taxation percentage electronically.

Please note, however, that although your employer can access your tax information electronically, it is your responsibility to check that the information on your tax card is accurate.

The Danish tax card is divided into two parts - a primary card and a secondary card. The two cards state the same information. The difference is that the primary card is used by your main employer and the secondary card is only used if you have an extra job.

When you are liable to pay tax in Denmark you must report your income(s) and/or property to SKAT. It is your responsibility to inform SKAT about your financial situation - both incomes in and outside of Denmark. How much you have to pay in tax depends on your income as well as a number of other factors, such as whether you are paying interest on a loan or loans, whether you own property, etc. Your tax card states the percentage of tax you are required to pay.

When non-Danish citizens move to Denmark they are required to have a number of legal documents, such as application for EU registration certificate (For EU/EEA and Swiss citizens), getting a CPR number and health insurance card, and acquiring a Danish tax card. These are documents that are handled by different authorities, who are all located at different addresses.

The ICS is based on International Community's One Stop Shop service since 2009. The service was initiated to make the process of acquiring different legal documents easier for international workers and their families, when they arrive in the Aarhus area. At International Citizen Service internationals can meet with The State Administration of Central Jutland, Aarhus Municipality’s Citizens’ Services, and SKAT, at the same time, in the same office.

Everyone who is legally residing and/or working in Denmark can get a Danish tax card.

At ICS you can get assistance with:

• residence permit for non-EU citizens
• registration certificate for EU citizens (for EU/EEA and Swiss citizens)
• tax card
• social security number - CPR (residents of Aarhus Municipality only)
• health insurance card
• Danish driver’s licence
•  

At ICS you will also meet representatives of International Community who will help you deal with any other enquiries you may have.

• ICS cannot help you to obtain a CPR number and health insurance card if you do not live in Aarhus Municipality.
• To obtain a CPR number you must contact your own Municipality’s Citizens’ Services.

• You will not get a CPR number or a health insurance card on the day of your visit to ICS. The service assistants from Aarhus Citizens’ Services will assist you with your application for a CPR number and a health insurance card. Your CPR number and your health insurance card will be sent to your Danish address within 1-2 weeks of submission of your application.

You should report you income to SKAT upon arrival in Denmark. If you start working without having a Danish tax card, your employer is obliged to deduct 55 percent of your pay as provisional tax.

To make your visit at ICS as efficient as possible, there are different documents you can fill out before you arrive. There are also a range of items you must remember to bring with you to ICS, depending on what you need assistance with. 

You may also find it helpful to read up on what legal documents you are required to have in order upon arrival in Denmark, before you go to ICS. By doing so, you are better prepared for the meeting, and you get to know what questions are relevant for you to ask, when you meet with the different authorities.

If you are an EU citizen and need to apply for a Certificate of Registration we suggest that you print out The Application of EU Residence Document and fill in what you can before you visit ICS. This will save time at ICS, as well as giving you the opportunity to familiarise yourself with the process before your meeting with a representative of the State Administration for Central Jutland.

You must submit your application in person. This also applies to accompanying family members. When you go to ICS, take:

• Your passport
• A passport photo
• Documentation for the reason of your stay – you can find examples of which documentation this may be at the State Administration’s website.

Furthermore:

• If your child/children is/are moving with you to Denmark, the child/children must also appear in person when you submit your application. And you must present your child’s/children’s birth certificate(s) (the original or a certified copy) and a passport photo of each child.
• If you are bringing a child/children from a previous relationship with you to Denmark, you must present to the Regional State Administration a document which verifies that the other legal parent has given his/her permission for you to relocate the child/children to Denmark. You must also take with you a verified copy of a photo ID of the other legal parent.

To qualify for a CPR number you must have an address in Denmark. Furthermore, you must take with you a variety of certificates depending on your current civil status (see below). Please note that if your certificates are not in Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, English or German, you should take with you a certified translation of them. 

• Your Danish residence and work permit (Non-EU citizens), or Certificate of Registration (for EU/EEA citizens) if you have already been issued with one. Nordic citizens must take their passport. 
• Some form of photo ID e.g. your passport.
• If you have children, your child’s/ren’s birth certificate(s).
• If you are married, your marriage certificate or a certified copy of it.
• If you are divorced, your divorce certificate.
• If you are a widow/er, the death certificate of your husband/wife.

To obtain a Danish tax card, please, contact SKAT. You will need to:

• Fill out this form 04.063 E.
• Get a declaration or contract of employment from your employer stating your salary and terms of employment.
• Provide your CPR number, by bringing your health insurance card. If you have not been issued a CPR number, bring some form of a valid photo-ID, such as your passport.

Thirty party/personal liability insurance provides cover when the insured incurs legally binding liability for damage to people or property.

Depending on your property, of the insurance cover you are legally required to have includes:

• Third-party/liability insurance if you own a car, motorcycle, scooter or moped.
• Fully comprehensive motor insurance if you have borrowed money to finance the purchase of a motor vehicle.
• A dog-owner’s third-party insurance, if you own a dog.
• A horse-owner’s third-party insurance, if you own a horse.
• a Fire insurance for buildings if you are a homeowner with a loan secured against your house.

Nordic citizens are automatically covered by the Danish Health Security Act.

Your health insurance card is a proof of the fact that you are covered by the Danish healthcare system. You will have to present your health insurance card in connection with all health care services, such as when you visit your GP or a hospital - including the accident and emergency department.

Your health insurance card is also often requested as a means of proof of your CPR number. You will be asked for your health insurance card by most public and many private service points as a means of identification of your CPR number. It is recommended that you always have your health insurance card with you.

This insurance pays a lump sum in the event of personal accident. The compensation paid depends on the degree of disability resulting from the injury. For the insured or his/her surviving relatives to be entitled to compensation, the accident must comply with the insurer’s definition of an accident.

Depending on your assets and circumstances, some optional insurance cover may constitute a sound investment. Optional types of insurance include:

• Home content insurance (combined contents and liability insurance).
• Building insurance if you are a homeowner (usually combined with fire insurance for buildings).
• Fully comprehensive motor insurance (usually combined with compulsory third-party motor liability insurance).
• Personal accident insurance.
• Life and pension insurance.
• Health and/or medical expense insurance.

If possible, you should get your European health insurance card from your local authority before leaving for Denmark. This card is proof that you are entitled to health insurance in your home country. This insurance covers content of your home and possessions in the event of damage/loss due to theft, fire, storm, etc. The insurance also comprises liability insurance that covers members of the household in the event of them incurring liability as private individuals. The insurance comprises legal aid insurance which covers the cost in the event of several types of private legal action in which members of the household may become involved. This type of insurance also goes under the name of family insurance, household insurance or Basic Family Insurance.

It covers, among other things, fire, theft, water damage, liability and legal aid.

We strongly advise you to take out health insurance in your home country to cover any medical care costs  until you have register with Citizens’ Services and been issued a CPR number and health insurance card.

Depending upon your personal circumstances, you may want to take out additional insurance to cover:

• Your means of transport: car, motorbike, bike, moped, scooter or boat.
• Any pets you may have.
• Own your own house or holiday cottage, and your belongings there.
• Your spare-time interests and international travel.

As an international student from a country outside of EU/EEA and a non-Nordic country, you are covered by the Danish Health Insurance Act as soon as you register at Citizens’ Service. You must register at Citizens’ Services within five days after your arrival in Denmark.

We strongly advise you to take out health insurance prior to your departure for Denmark to cover you until you have registered with the Danish authorities.

In Denmark, unemployment insurance is provided by unemployment insurance funds - private associations associated with trade unions and other professional organisations. To become a member of an unemployment insurance fund, you must be between age 18 and 63 and be resident in Denmark (or another EU/EEA country and work in Denmark, in which case you must fulfil certain requirements). As soon as you have received your health insurance card, you can access the public health service through your General Practitioner. However, you will not receive your CPR number and your health insurance card until up to two weeks from the day you registered with Citizen’s Service.

Note that all dental treatment and services have set prices and that all adults will be charged for all services. This means that if, for instance, you are offered anaesthesia when the dentist is filling your cavity, this service will be added to your bill in addition to the price of the filling. It is up to you to decide, in consultation with your dentist, whether or not this is necessary.

Ask your dentist for or the prices of the various services.

Before you take out insurance in Denmark we recommend that you contact several insurance companies to find the cover that best suits your needs.

The Danish health insurance covers the cost of acute medical treatment during the first month of a vacation in Europe. You must therefore also take your Danish health insurance card with you when you travel outside Denmark. However, please note that the health insurance does not cover the cost of repatriation for medical reasons to your home country or Denmark, emergency repatriation or personal liability. For this reason, we encourage you to take out travel insurance/ additional insurance prior to your departure.

The local Citizens’ Services will provide you with contact information for the local provider of free Danish language courses. After sign-up, the language school will want to see you and give an assessment of which class will give you best value and most effective learning possibilities.

The public health insurance doses not cover the cost of e.g. medicine, dental care, physiotherapy and podiatry. However, you may be eligible for a subsidy. The health insurance does not cover the cost of repatriation for medical reasons when you are abroad, either.
