In a parliamentary political system like that of Denmark, the political parties are the crucial players. The development of the Danish party system is therefore the key to understanding progress in Danish democracy.
Starting with a brief description of the Danish political system, the lecture will analyse and discuss the development of the Danish party system from 1973 onwards. What does the increased number of parties mean? Has competition between the parties changed its format? Have new topics become part of party competition and what have the consequences been? Has party competition become multidimensional, for example?
The lecture will also discuss what the development in the party system has meant for the parties’ opportunities to implement reforms in areas such as the welfare state.
